In their acquisition of timber, Honka favour Finnish pine. In this way it is ensured that the wood is brought up in accordance with sustainable development. Additionally, Honka favours forest areas near to the factories. The Honka factories themselves are located in the optimal pine growth areas and short transport distances ensure less impact on the environment combined with more competitve raw material costs. The glue used in the lamination process of Honka logs is pro-environmental. The use of the material and cleaning the machinery do not generate any pollutant waste. Honka is able to generate the required heat by burning the surplus wood material at both factories. In Karstula, the waste wood is burned in a 10 MWh power plant that produces almost all the heat needed by Karstula town centre and neighbouring companies as well as for the factory itself. Additionally, it generates 1 MW of “green” electricity which covers the annual power requirement of the Karstula factory. |
